Not so sure about the last one.

As we have talked about before, I am not smart enough to know if the science is correct, but I don’t think it matters for the decision. The consequences of getting it wrong, if the science is correct, are so grave that unless we were like 90% sure that there is no climate change — and we are nowhere near this level of certainty — we still need to take measures against it. There are lots of other reasons to have a logical environmental/energy policy, too.

The challenge the Republicans have is getting through the primaries with an electable candidate. Double Down makes this point too. The phrase the book uses is “Etch a Sketch,” in the sense that after the primaries, the candidate can just shake the Etch a Sketch and draw something completely new for the election. I think that, in today’s world of 24/7 press coverage, video cameras in smartphones, and YouTube, this is very difficult — in any event, it is a strategy that Romney did not want to follow since he had already been tagged as a “flip flopper.” That’s why I look at the very crowded Republican field of candidates with trepidation. There will be a race to the right during the primaries, from which it will be very difficult to recover in the election — you have seen this already, for example, when Marco Rubio floated an immigration plan and then immediately had to back track. Hilary won’t face the same kind of pressure, unless Elizabeth Warren jumps in, which Warren has already ruled out; I don’t see anybody else out there who can put her under serious pressure. The good news is that, unless you are a member of the “pantsuit brigade,” Hilary is about as charismatic as a dead fish, so the Repubs won’t have to contend with that deficit. And she comes with a lot of baggage.

With this, and the pro-libertarian policies you mention, I might even support such a candidate.
